On Saturday 15 December a big press conference toke place in Mufaqarah, a village located in the South Hebron Hills, by initiative of the Popular Struggle Coordination Committee in cooperation with the Popular South Hebron Hills Popular Committee. The aim of this initiative was to launch the reconstruction of the mosque of the village, demolished for the second time few days ago from Israeli occupying forces, and to focus media attention on the area, declared Firing Zone 918 by Israeli government in ’70.
More than 60 people between Palestinians, Israeli activists and internationals assisted to the conference and clapped hands at the speech of Mahmoud, the leader of the village: after being evacuated in 1999, Mufaqarah and the other villages of the Firing Zone fight peacefully against demolition and evacuation orders, settlers and soldiers’ violence.
After the conference, the participant together with the residents contributed in cleaning the ruins of the mosque, under the control of about 20 soldiers who were observing hundreds metres away, to prepare the ground for the next reconstruction. Later in the afternoon, the group crossed by tractors a part of the Firing Zone, reaching the remote village of Al-Fakhit to meet the local community and his struggle to continue living in their land.
The mosque of Mufaqarah is not only a mosque, is the way to stress the legitimate right of the South Hebron Hills residents to remain steadfast on their land.
Join us next Saturday for the reconstruction!!!
